Importing a car from China to Algeria: the complete guide
Short answer: importing a car from China into Algeria means paying the Chinese purchase price, the FOB costs, sea freight and insurance, then Algerian customs at 15% of CIF up to 1,800 cc (30% above), plus 19% VAT, a 2% solidarity levy and a 2% customs service fee. Count on 45–50 days in optimal conditions, and 55–60 days if your shipment is transhipped or the port is congested.

What does it actually cost to import a car from China to Algeria?
The landed cost is built in four layers. Nothing is hidden, and every layer is verifiable.
The CIF value (Cost of goods + Insurance + Freight) is the figure Algerian customs uses as the tax base. It is the Chinese purchase price plus the export-side costs plus sea freight and marine insurance. Everything else — duty, VAT, levies — is computed from that single number, converted into dinars at the exchange rate of the day.
- Purchase price in China — the supplier invoice, in RMB
- + FOB costs — inspection, inland transport to the port, export formalities, documentation, service fee
- + Sea freight and marine insurance → this gives the CIF value
- + Algerian customs — duty (15% or 30%) + VAT 19% + solidarity levy 2% + customs service fee 2%
Worked example — Geely Coolray 668 (1.5L, so the 15% bracket)
- CIF value: 1,459,000 DZD
- Customs duty 15%: 218,850 DZD
- VAT 19% × (CIF + duty): 318,792 DZD
- Solidarity levy 2% + customs service fee 2%: 58,360 DZD
- Total landed cost: ≈ 2,055,100 DZD
This is a method illustration built on a real quotation. The final figure depends on the model, the customs reference value and the exchange rate on the day of declaration.
Which taxes apply, and at what rate?
Three main taxes stack on top of each other, plus two smaller levies. The rate you pay depends almost entirely on engine displacement — which is why every model we import is a 1.5L or 1.5T.
| Tax | ≤ 1,800 cc (petrol / hybrid) | > 1,800 cc | Electric |
|---|---|---|---|
| Customs duty (DD) | 15% | 30% | 30% |
| Consumption tax (TIC) | 0% | 60% to 100% | 0% |
| VAT | 19% | 19% | 19% |
| Solidarity levy (PRC) | 2% | 2% | 2% |
| Customs service fee (TCS) | 2% | 2% | 2% |
The tax base is the CIF value. If the price you declare is below the customs internal reference value (the "Argus" value), the administration taxes the higher reference figure instead of your invoice.
Is it still possible to import a fully built car (CBU) into Algeria?
Yes. Since the 2025 Finance Law, approved dealers and importers may again import fully built units (CBU) — an activity that had been prohibited since 2016.
The duty on a fully built vehicle remains deliberately high, because the stated policy goal is to push local assembly: manufacturers are expected to reach 15% local integration by year 3 and 35% by year 5.
- Since 1 January 2026, proof of payment of the new-vehicle tax is no longer required at customs clearance (article 147 bis of the stamp duty code). Clearance is simpler and faster.
- The 2026 Finance Law exempts 10,000 passenger vehicles with 10 seats or more from all duties and taxes, whether built or unassembled.
- Diesel cars are banned from import altogether — new or used. See our dedicated guide.
What documents do you need before the car ships?
One missing document stops the entire clearance, and the car sits at port accruing storage fees. This is where most failed imports die — not at sea.
- Commercial invoice showing the chassis number
- Bank domiciliation — must be obtained before shipment, not after
- Certificate of origin
- Certificate of conformity (COC) — issued after pre-shipment inspection, allow 10–15 working days
- ECTN/BSC number shown on the bill of lading
- Marine insurance certificate
- Detailed declaration (D10) and the clearance certificate (form 846) at destination
Documents must be drawn up in French or in Arabic. An English-only commercial invoice will be sent back.
How long does the whole process really take?
45–50 days in optimal conditions; 55–60 days if the shipment is transhipped or the port is congested. The ocean is rarely the bottleneck — the paperwork and the customs queue are.
| Stage | Realistic duration |
|---|---|
| Export documentation, inspection, COC | 5–10 days |
| Sea freight (China → Algiers) | 30–45 days |
| Customs clearance at destination | 3–15 working days |
| Transhipment or port congestion (if any) | +7–10 days |
Final timing depends on actual shipping conditions. We quote 45–50 days as the best case and 55–60 days as the realistic case including transhipment or congestion — not a single optimistic number.
Why buy a Chinese car rather than a European or Korean one?
Algeria imported 143,012 vehicles from China in the first half of 2026, up 235.5% year on year. That is not a fashion effect — it is a structural price gap.
- Displacement that fits the best tax bracket. Most Chinese models sold into Algeria are 1.5L or 1.5T, so they land in the 15% duty and 0% TIC band.
- Equipment included at the base price. Panoramic roof, reversing camera, cruise control and automatic transmission are standard where European rivals charge extra.
- Warranty from the manufacturer, generally 4 years or 100,000 km on the models we carry.
- Parts availability has improved sharply since 2023, as the installed fleet has grown.
The honest counterpoint: resale value on a Chinese brand is still below a Dacia's in Algeria. If you resell after 2 years, that matters. If you keep the car 5+ years, it does not.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to import a car from China to Algeria?
Take the Chinese purchase price, add the FOB costs (inspection, inland transport, export formalities, documents, service), then sea freight and insurance — that gives the CIF value. Customs then applies 15% duty up to 1,800 cc (30% above), plus 19% VAT on (CIF + duty), plus a 2% solidarity levy and a 2% customs service fee. On a Geely Coolray 668 with a CIF value of 1,459,000 DZD, the landed cost comes to roughly 2,055,100 DZD.
Can I import a car into Algeria as an individual, not a company?
Yes, under the personal import regime: a used vehicle under 3 years old, one vehicle per person every 3 years, paid for with your own foreign currency, and you must be resident in Algeria. The reduction is 50% of total duties and taxes up to 1,800 cc, 20% above, and 80% for a fully electric vehicle. Approval is not automatic — the file is examined case by case.
Is it cheaper to import from China than to buy locally in Algeria?
On comparable equipment, usually yes, but the gap is narrower than people assume once you add freight, duty and VAT. The real advantage shows up on fully equipped versions: a Chinese SUV with panoramic roof, automatic gearbox and reversing camera often lands below the local retail price of a less equipped European or Korean equivalent. Compare landed cost against retail price, not against FOB.
What is the biggest risk in importing a car to Algeria?
Not the shipping — the documentation and the customs valuation. A missing ECTN number, a domiciliation obtained after shipment, or a declared price below the customs reference value will each delay or reprice your import. The customs reference value ("Argus") is the one that catches people out: if your invoice is below it, the higher reference figure becomes the tax base.
Do you handle the whole process or only the purchase?
The whole chain: sourcing and supplier vetting in China, pre-shipment inspection, export documentation, certificates of conformity, booking and sea freight, ECTN number, marine insurance, then customs clearance support and delivery in Algeria.
